Fortnite is one of the biggest games in the world, Fortnite involves credit cards, and Fortnite is popular with kids. Taken together, those three things make Epic Games' megahit a magnet for ne'er do wells of all kinds, whether they're scammers trying to infect phones with malware by promising free V-bucks or out and out hackers trying to steal logins to attempt to get at the credit card info contained within. I, like many other Fortnite players, have gotten several emails about a series of unsuccessful attempts to log in to my account and I, like many other Fortnite players, tend to ignore it. They were unsuccessful, after all, so problem solved. It appears that Epic has a new strategy to increase account security, and it's a clever one. Loot always works, after all.
Epic is now handing out a free emote to anyone that enables two-factor authentication, always the best way to protect your accounts online. Consider it a little like locking your door: it doesn't make your home impervious to thieves, but it makes you a significantly less attractive target, and most criminals would just prefer to go with an easier one. It means that you no longer access your account through a single means: first you input your password and then you provide verification through another step, which in many cases has something to do with your phone.
So here's what you'll want to do: login into your Epic account either on the launcher or on Epic.com. Either way, you'll wind up on the webpage when you select "manage account" from the drop-down menu underneath your name. From there, go to "password and security." Lower down on the page you'll see a header for "two-factor authentication."
From there, you'll get a QR code that will serve as an authenticator. What you'll want to do is download an authenticator app on your phone--Google Authenticator is what I use--and use that app to scan the QR Code. It will cause the app to automatically generate temporary codes that you'll use to login into your account on new devices or buy things. That means that even if someone has your password, they'll also need the code in order to compromise your account in any way.
If you do all that, you'll get the Boogie Down emote next time you log in. A little reward for your security.
